Dengue and Homeopathy

Dengue Fever triggers an instant fear, and rightly so. It’s a viral fever spread by mosquitoes. It is also known as the “breakbone fever”.

The main symptoms of Dengue Fever are:

• High fever
• Severe muscle and joint pains.
• Headache
• Pain behind the eyes worsened by eye motion
• Nausea or vomiting
• Skin rash or Itch. 

A few cases of Dengue Fever may show a bleeding tendency too when it is termed Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever. The bleeding may be under the skin (Petechiae, Ecchymosis, Purpura), from the nose, gums, vomiting of blood or blood in the stool. In such cases, the platelets in the blood significantly decrease leading to hemorrhages and also extravasation of fluids. In severe bleeding and extravasation of fluids, shock develops with lowered blood pressure, rapid or weak pulse with cold clammy skin. Such severe cases with shock are referred to as Dengue Shock Syndrome.

Eupatorium PerfiolatumThere is a talk regarding a particular homeopathic medicine Eupatorium Perfiolatum as being preventive and curative for dengue fever. Here, I would say that, though Eupatorium is the single most commonly indicated medicine that matches symptoms of the Dengue fever, it is not the only medicine. It forms a part of the prescription that is given to the patient along with other indicated medication selected after taking up the symptoms of the case. So avoid self-medication of this medicine and instead consult a qualified Homoeopath to give Homoeopathic medicine.

Other medicines

There are many other similar effective medicines like Phos, Ars alb, Ipecac, Rhus tox, etc. which are given as per the patients' symptoms. 

General Tips

• Hydration or frequent drinking of a good amount of fluids is required to ward off complications.
• Frequent Visit to the Homoeopathic Doctor is required as he has to ask for frequent checking of patients CBC and Liver enzyme levels and also to keep an eye on ominous signs of Dengue Hemorrhagic fever or Dengue Shock Syndrome.
• Homeopathic Medicines are proving very effective in Dengue and have shown an effective cure in thousands of dengue cases. But I would also advise people along with homeopathic medication, to be in touch with a hospital, whenever dengue has been diagnosed.- IV fluids administration may be required in a small number of patients who are unable to drink fluids for some reason.- In cases of Dengue Haemorrhagic fever and Dengue Shock Syndrome, Urgent hospitalization may be required as such cases can turn into a life-threatening situation.- If the platelet count falls below a critical level (from 8000 to 28000/ml, depending upon case to case), it may be necessary to transfuse platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or Apheresis Platelets.

In the end, I would say that though the word ‘Dengue’ creates an instant scare, there is no need to panic as it is a self-limiting viral disease. People just need to be cautious and maintain their guard and need to consult a physician.
